Ashton's First Year

Lingual Frenectomy

(12 days)

Ashton had his oral evaluation done at 11:30 this morning to see about his borderline tongue tie first noticed at birth..... after a 20 second consultation Dr. S said that he thought that Ashton needed just a little snip.... I was a bit upset to think what was going to happen, but Dr. S really explained it so well, and told me that kids are more traumatized by having their head held, than the actual snip and that a circ was 100000 times more painful. Dr. S said that the skin holding down your tongue to the bottom of your mouth is so thin, and no nerves, that when you held it up to the light you can see right through it. The nurse equated it to pulling off a hang nail. Ashton did bleed a bit, but by the time I signed the receipt for payment he was already being brought back up to me, happy as a camper and wanted to nurse! All the nurses and Dr. S ooed and ahhhed over him and said "He'll be able to lick an ice cream cone like nobody's business now."

Ashton is good to go with NO follow-up, and Dr. S said that it's HIGHLY doubtful that he'll have to release it again because it was a GREAT release today.... and as we were walking back to the elevator Ashton stuck his tongue out past his lips!!!!! That was a pretty awesome thing......

10 Day Well Check

(10 days)

Today started out amazing when the FedEx guy dropped this off at our house from Scott's new company!!!! They are so amazing, and must think really highly of Scott. Hormones got the better of me and I teared up.... yet again!

Back to our regularly scheduled posting...

Ashton went for his 10 day well check today. He was SOOOOO good! I was a bit of a mess because it seemed nothing went right today. As in insurance hadn't had him added as a dependant yet, so I was kinda freaking out about that and then I changed Ashton's diaper this morning and noticed that his plastiblast ring from his circumcision had come off, all except for about 1 - 2 mm of skin/scar tissue attached. There was no way in heck I was going to touch it, because I knew it was hurting him... so on the phone I went. The OB that did his circ is ALWAYS in the office, except for today.... again, nothing was going right...... so they told me to call Dr. K and see if he couldn't do whatever needed to do.... and at first he told me to call the OB that delivered, and I told him I had already done that, so thankfully... he said he could take a look at it! YAY. Another stress relieved.

Back to the appointment. I LOVE Dr. K's office, they were all so happy to see Ashton, and of course everyone asked how Scott and Reese were doing since they had been in last week. Then the fun part!! Seeing how much he had grown!!!

At discharge on 8/18 Ashton was 7 lb 12 oz.... and he's now 8 lb 15 oz!!!!! Told you all the kid likes to eat!! And I only feed on demand! He also grew 1/4 inch in head and length. Dr. K was VERY pleased with his weight gain, obviously, and with his development so far.

08/16/08 *Birth* ~ 8 lb 6.9 oz, 21 1/4 in, 14 1/2 head circ
08/18/08 *Discharge* ~ 7 lb 12 oz
08/26/08 *10 Days* ~ 8 lb 15 oz, 21 1/2 in, 14 3/4 head circ

And yes, Dr. K did take a look at Ashton's plastic ring and ended up removing it by giving a little tug, Ashton only cried for maybe 5 seconds. He's such a laid back baby, and no way I was going to do that! But he was a super happy camper after he was redressed and heading home. He was able to get a decent nap since he was in some pain earlier. Poor kid.

All in all, WONDERFUL check up and he's not due back until 2 months of life!

Bit more of a Check-In & Follow-Up

(5 days)

And so far so good!

We've made several trips in the past few days to run errands, and get out and about. Ashton has been along for the ride only whimpering when dirty or hungry.... and thankfully we're usually in reach of a changing table or even a quick change in the car. Nursing in public is a BREEZE because I have my wraps, I actually was stopped on Tuesday at Target and an older lady asked to see him and I said he was nursing and she stammered and didn't know how to respond, but did get herself together enough to say how cool it was to have a sling to not show anything! Guess about 2 years of doing it prior I've gotten pretty good. Though my mom and I did have a good chuckle at her reaction.

The girls are SO good with him. Reese is my HUGE BIG HELPER, but having to limit her just a bit as she was coming down with a bit of a cold, and as a precaution Scott took her to Dr. K's office and he gave her a 5 day antibiotic to knock whatever she may be getting out of her…. Funny because Scott just went to see him on Monday as a precaution but he has more of a sinus infection due to allergies. NEVER A BORING MOMENT! But both are able to be around Ashton, just Scott has coughing spells. Riley is really a nurturing little soul as anytime Ashton cries or stirs she comes over to him and pats his head and says "It's ok Ashton…." BOTH are awesome at putting purell on their hands before they touch him…. Reese even goes over and does it herself without me even having to ask!! It's amazing!

Sleep is going pretty well, of course he sleeps best during the day, just like in the womb, but being 5 days out, can't really blame him. Night we have about every 2 - 3 hour nursing sessions, but that's a breeze because well….. Not lacking in that department, speaking of which…. I'm thrilled to report that things are going along AWESOMELY. I definitely have a complete boob man, my milk came in in less than 48 hours. <-------- the exact reaction from the entire nursing staff my entire stay as well. I joked that of the 4 babies in the nursery that if that was a version of "Big Brother" he'd be kicked out for being the routy late night partier!

Ashton is TOTALLY all about sucking, I ended up signing a release form for him to have a pacifier while in the hospital so I wasn't a complete human pacifier for him, the guy will suck until the cows come home, he had already sucked his hands and thumb almost raw when he was in the nursery between feedings. Figured it was MUCH easier to break a paci habit than a thumb habit….. At least the paci isn't attached.

I also decided to let the nurses cup feed him formula on the 2nd night because he nursed from 7PM - 1:30AM and was SO upset and frustrated that there was nothing more than colostrum coming out. He had emptied his bowels at 2PM that afternoon, I mean MEGA POOP, so I know he needed a fill up, and his billi levels were starting to go up…. So well, I put aside my angst and did what was best for him, and he sucked down 25 cc's, I think that's what the nurse said, but it was right around 1 oz of formula and slept for 6 hours, he actually slept through his next feeding, only nursing for about 5 minutes…… though one of the nurses kept assuring me that my milk would be in in ANY hour! Finally it did come in that next morning after breakfast. He was a happy camper….. And I in turn, a happy mommy.

He's been nursing like a champ and sleeping like a champ ever since. I'm happy I'm able to keep up with his demand even at 5 days old…. As my MIL said when she came to meet me at the hospital, "Scott told me he was a monster!"

Hurm, I'm sure that there is more, but I need to go rest and take a bit of a nap before the next feeding.

I hope everyone is doing well, again thank you everyone for the congratulations and well wishes!
